For this year's Open House New York, I took a trip to see Eero Saarinen's TWA Flight Center. I was lucky enough to grow up near one of his buildings, so I've always admired his work. Since there were tons of others taking photos as well, I focused mostly on some of the details that interested me in particular. You can see selects from the shots I took, here.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1872235885204835805.post-63445078757129542922014-09-12T23:21:00.000-04:002014-09-12T23:21:41.237-04:00

We were just in the LA area for a wedding and had a chance to visit with a few friends. They treated us to some amazing food. Any LA friends should make sure to check out Good Girl Dinette in Highland Park. We had a chance to stop by at The Morgan Library and Museum yesterday and I had my camera with me, so I finally got a chance to capture some of Renzo Piano's excellent renovation job from 2006 and discovered some unexpected things like the spectacular ceiling done by Samuel Yellin in the annex. Take a look here. We just got back from a two-week trip to Vietnam and Hong Kong. Thanks to Cuong Pham for inviting us to travel with him on a chef's tour of Vietnam. We were traveling, amongst others, with chefs Stuart Brioza, Brian Caswell, Edward Lee, and Paul Qui, so there was a lot of cooking and a lot of eating involved. We pretty much continued the eating trend on our own in Hong Kong, where my wife was one of the three judges for the Man Asian Literary Prize. Congrats to Tan Twan Eng, who took home the prize.

I have an extensive photo set from both Vietnam and Hong Kong legs of the trip.
The Vietnam photo set, here, consists of 5 sections: Selects (my faves), Chefs, Food (the raw and the cooked), People (other non-chefs we were with for portions), and Architecture and Nature. We traveled to Phu Quoc, Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) and Da Nang.

The Hong Kong set, here, consists of 6 sections: Art Shots (shots of a personal nature that I am fond of and a set of abstract architectural shots of Hong Kong buildings that fascinated me), People that I found interesting, General shots, Street Art, a few photos from the Man Asian Literary awards dinner and reception, and lastly some lighthearted shots of Monique and me.

(explanation)

Back in the late '80s, Factory Records started producing a number of special boxed cassettes of their bands' albums. Since I was a big 'walkman' listener, I bought a number of them. They were really cheap ($7.50), because I bought most of them directly from 'of Factory New York'. They had a small collection of them there, in their Spring St headquarters, in Manhattan. There were a few that I didn't have interest in because either I didn't like the band or already had the album on Vinyl. I started making exceptions though for New Order and Joy Division albums because the cassette versions were so cool, and before I knew it I had 20 of these so-called 'boxed cassettes'. Then, after New Order's Substance album came out, Factory pretty much stopped making them. I found out a number of years later that they had only made 22 and it turned out that I was only missing two to make a full set: Happy Monday's first album and a random classical album by Wim Mertins, called 'Educes Me'. Well, I never got the Happy Monday's first album because I already had it on first vinyl pressing with the cool plastic slip cover and the original track list intact. The Wim Mertins album, I didn't get because it was a harp player and I was more into Post Punk and New Wave.

Well, long story short, a pristine copy of the first Happy Mondays album (a masterpiece, by the way - produced by John Cale of the Velvet Underground) made itself available to me recently, so I bought it.

So, only one to go to make a complete set. Please, if you have, or know where to get that Wim Mertins album 'Educes Me', please contact me. My other 21 boxed cassettes are lonely!

I had to work for a bunch of this weekend, but it's amazing what you can do and see in a few hours on a Sunday in Brooklyn. I harvested some figs from my tree, went downtown to see PowderKeg (my wife's new writing space) and was fortunate enough to get a chance to finally see Stephen Powers' amazing artwork next to the Brooklyn Macy's. I have to say that Powers' piece is the best combination of street art and poetry I've seen. Then, when we got home we had the most amazing fig, bacon, and caramelized onion pizza. Check out the three photosets here (click on the titles in the bottom left of the photosets to choose which one to see).
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1872235885204835805.post-68701297173401455172012-06-29T16:31:00.004-04:002012-06-29T16:42:50.857-04:00Finland Photos - Second Trip
